1934 Marx, Smokey Joe the Climbing Fireman in Original Box

1934 Marx, Smokey Joe the Climbing Fireman in Original Box

Near pristine example of the classic Marx toy, "Smokey Joe, The Climbing Fireman". Grades excellent+ to near mint and the best one I've seen since 2006. Comes with its scarce original box which is the best I've seen; it grades excellent.

Marx clockwork climbing fireman toys were produced for over 30 years in at least 4 variations. However, this example was the very first. Using the attached key wind Joe up with the lever in the stop position, get him situated on some of the lower rungs, release the lever, and up he goes. The legs and feet move one over the other, while the hands pass loosely through the vertical rungs. It's also one of the best working examples I've seen. It very rarely lost its grip or took a wrong step.

The toy is complete with all of its original helmet, two piece ladder, and base. Holes located on the sides of the bottom upright ladder allow angle adjustment to 3 different positions.

The box cover shows the climbing fireman surrounded by smoke and fire. A mysterious figure silhouetted in a red window watches from below. Side panels include a 5-step set of directions along with a complicated looking schematic. It has both of its original end flaps; the top flap is tucked in, while the bottom flap is locked. Still has its original 59¢ price sticker on the bottom.

Size: Fireman 7½", Ladder 23" tall.
